This short film demonstrates a well-established programme of outreach work – Children and the Organ (CATO) carried out in local primary schools by the Derby and District Organists’ Association, in order to inspire understanding and enthusiasm for the organ.
What is Children and the Organ (CATO)?
Children and the Organ (CATO) is a hands-on outreach programme that introduces primary-aged pupils (typically 9–11) to the pipe organ through an engaging, curriculum-linked workshop in a church setting. Designed with teachers, it combines music, science, technology and creative activity in a lively, memorable experience.
Pupils hear the organ in action, explore how sound is made using real pipes, and discover how the instrument works – from bellows to pedals. A highlight for many is the chance to try the organ themselves, alongside activities such as playing a mini-organ, listening games, and designing their own pipe layouts. Sessions typically last around two hours and are structured to keep pupils actively involved throughout.
CATO is delivered by experienced organists and is designed to be flexible, accessible and genuinely useful to schools, with a strong emphasis on participation and discovery.

Teachers and event organisers can also access a range of free follow-up resources to support classroom learning and extend the experience beyond the visit.
